INJURIES OF NERVES and Their Consequences by S. Weir Mitchell, M.D. A landmark work by "the father of medical neurology", an American surgeon who, during the Civil War, served as director of treatment of nervous injuries and maladies at Turner's Lane Hospital, Philadelphia. Mitchell was also a psychiatrist, toxicologist, novelist, and poet. A celebrity in both America and Europe, he was considered one of the great geniuses of his age, and his writings on neurology were to remain highly influential for decades. This 1872 hardcover first printing remains in quite good shape. The covers show minor wear, as seen in the photos. There is a small number label on the spine (photo #7) but no other marks that would suggest a library discard. The binding is somewhat cracked at both endpapers (photos #8 & #9), however, the text is still firmly bound. A photo of Mitchell, clipped from a magazine, is neatly glued by the inner edge to the preface page. The text has only minor signs of age and use, no writing, tears, creases, or other significant flaws. Certainly an above-average copy of this extremely rare collector's item.
